About The Photographic Section of the Academy of Science and Art

The purpose of the Photographic Section of the Academy of Science and Art is to provide an environment for individual study and advancement in the knowledge, practice and appreciation of the art of photography. To fulfill this purpose the Section supports lectures, competitions, field trips and information interchange.

The Section meets the second, third and fourth Tuesday of each month September through May. Visitors are welcome to attend these meetings, which start at 8:00 pm. However, many of the members arrive between 7 and 8 to talk about photography. This socialization is a good time to interact with other photographers.

The second Tuesday of each month is devoted to displaying and critiquing slides and prints. A panel of judges evaluates each entry and members and visitors discuss some of the entries. These meetings are an excellent way to improve your photographic skills.

The third and fourth Tuesdays are devoted to programs such as lectures, demonstrations, travelogues, or location "shootouts" with other club members.

The Section sponsors an annual Salon show where a panel of judges evaluates member's prints and slides. Awards are given for entries that are accepted and for the best submittals in several categories. In addition to the Salon show, the club conducts a year-end print and slide competition to select the member prints and slides of the year.

In the social area, the Section sponsors two banquets, and a picnic.

As you can see, the Photographic Section, which currently consists of about 90 members, is very active in both social and photographic areas. There's lots of fun to be had- whether shooting, listening and looking, or socializing.
